Which is The Most Popular Electric Guitar?

Ever since the electric guitar was invented in 1931, guitar makers have refined and recreated this glorious instrument as it launched rock and roll into quite possibly the most influential musical style the world has ever seen in such a short span of time. The electric guitar is at the heart of so many modern music styles beyond rock and roll, however, and it’s arguably the single most inspiring instrument that anyone can play. That’s why we’re guitarists.

Considering all of the most popular electric guitars on the market today, none have had such influence as the Fender Stratocaster and Gibson Les Paul. These guitars are both used in a wide variety of styles, but they are so very different. The Stratocaster offers up a sleek solid body design with single coil pickups that provide more clarity than its counterpart. The Gibson Les Paul offers up an elegant body design full of curves and equipped with humbucker pickups that provide more warmth and power that its counterpart.

We’ve celebrated these guitars for well over 50 years, but which one is celebrated most? This infographic shows which guitars are searched for most in Google, separately for each state in the USA and including both branded and non-branded searches for each guitar model. At first glance, it appears that this is a “Les Paul country.” However, considering branded searches, the Fender Stratocaster outpaces the Gibson Les Paul by a fair margin. The Fender Telecaster, widely accepted as the 3rd most popular elecrtric guitar, is not far behind. Note: We considered that “Les Paul” was a also a person, however included the data since the intentions (and Google’s search results) of these searches were mixed (to what degree is immeasurable). We also included searches of “strat” and “tele” to be fair, but they had minimal search volume.

Digging further into guitarists interests, we also sought out the most searched electric guitar brands. Gibson leads the pack by a fair margin, and ESP guitars surprisingly come in at 2nd place. Fender, PRS and Gretsch round out the top 5.
